Should You Build a Detached Garage When Building Your New Colorado Home?

When planning a new custom home, homeowners naturally focus most of their attention on the house.

But on rural Colorado properties, the garage can be nearly as important.

Vehicles, outdoor equipment, ATVs, tools, trailers, tractors, recreational gear, and workshop space can quickly overwhelm a standard two-car attached garage.

For some properties, a detached garage is worth planning from the beginning.

More Flexible Space

A detached structure can provide space for uses that may not fit naturally inside the home.

That could include:

  • A workshop

  • RV storage

  • Boat storage

  • Tractor storage

  • Woodworking

  • Automotive projects

  • Tools

  • Seasonal equipment

  • Recreational vehicles

Separating these activities from the main house can also reduce noise and clutter.

Better Placement

A detached garage can sometimes be positioned where vehicles naturally enter the property rather than being attached to the home simply because that is conventional.

The location can be selected around driveway access, terrain, snow, views, and how the owner uses the property.

Plan Both Structures Together

Even if the garage will be built later, it is helpful to include it in the original site plan.

The home, garage, driveway, septic system, utility routes, drainage, and other improvements all compete for space.

Planning ahead can reduce future excavation and prevent one improvement from blocking another.

Build Now or Later?

Some homeowners construct the house and detached garage simultaneously.

Others prepare the site and utilities so the garage can be added in a later phase.

Both approaches can work.

What matters is making the decision before the property is fully developed.

Colorado Garage and Workshop Construction

Valor Development builds custom homes, garages, workshops, barns, barndominiums, and steel structures throughout Westcliffe, Silver Cliff, Custer County, Fremont County, and surrounding South Central Colorado.

Whether the garage is part of a new home project or a standalone improvement, we can help plan the structure together with the site, driveway, utilities, and future needs of the property.
